Auckland International Airport Ordinary Shares ANNOUNCEMENT
AIA08/05/2001GENREL: 1630 HRS Auckland International Airport LimitedGEN:
AIA: AIR FORCE AT AUCKLAND AIRPORTAuckland International Airport confirmed
it could accommodate all current andfuture Royal NZ Air Force requirements
at Auckland Airport. Auckland AirportMD John Goulter said a relocation of
the Air Force to Auckland InternationalAirport would represent a more
efficient use of the country's resources, asall required facilities are
already in place at Auckland Airport. He said itcould well be argued that
NZ already has too many airports bothinternationally and domestically. "A
relocation would enable the Governmentto divest itself of prime real estate
at Whenuapai and Hobsonville and at thesame time simplify and improve safety
within Auckland's air space. Noisewould not be an issue as fighter aircraft
are not involved." "We have anumber of suitable areas at Mangere that could
accommodate hangers andmaintenance bases and we could even build residential
housing for staff", hesaid." "The development of such facilities could be
undertaken by thecompany and in turn leased to the Air Force on a long-term
basis. This, coupled with the resale value of the Whenuapai land, must have
a realattraction to Government." Mr Goulter said that the concept of
Whenuapai asa freight facility was unlikely as 80% of all cargo is already
carried inscheduled passenger aircraft. Nearby examples of this joint
concept areCanberra, Newcastle and Honolulu airports where both air force
and civilianaircraft operate from the same facilities.End CA:00066783
