Here are a couple of things to try (good luck!).

 

1. Open the Adobe Acrobat Reader program, click on the "open file" button, change the "files of type" window at the bottom to "all files", go to the directory where you saved the file and double-click it. This may work because if the file is a pdf file, but doesn't end in .pdf, the computer doesn't open Acrobat automatically.

 

2. Most of the DAT files I use can be opened using Notepad (should be listed in the table of programs you mentioned).
