          Staveley Industries plc ('Staveley')

The Board of Staveley notes the announcement made on 23
August 2000 by Guinness Peat Group plc ('GPG') relating
to a cash offer for Staveley.

The Board of Staveley is considering GPG's proposals and
will make a further announcement in due course.

In the meantime, Staveley shareholders are urged to take
no action regarding GPG's proposals.
