Brian, a much better reflection of the state of the market is provided by a comparative table t/a's call an Advance/Decline line, where a daily running comparison of higher closing stocks with lower closing stocks is plotted as a line chart. It's possibly available somewhere ; otherwise most charting software will generate it.
