Here's another cafe tending/student perspective - I love the stuff. Most places sell it for either $2.50 or $2.60 so I never pay $2.85 but if everyone put their prices up I'd probably pay - I'm addicted to the stuff. When you compare the price to coffee (it's an excellent substitute) then it's fairly reasonable. I've been doing little informal surveys in lecture theatres (scanning the desk-tops): in theatres of 150 students it is not unusual to have over 50 drink bottles on the desks. Of these, about half are "Pump" bottles, and most of the remainder (I'd say at a guess 35%) are V bottles. The rest are a mix of Coke, Sprite, NZ Natural Min Water. The survey is a little unfair on V too as I believe many of the bottles of Pump are there solely as carriers of tap water - i.e. they make good drink bottles so students reuse. Thus in a day surveying many classes, a great deal of the Pump bottles will be counted twice but not so many of the V bottles will be(The bins are always overflowing with V bottles). V definitely has a dominant position in the student market in Wellington. Conclusion: Students at Victoria LOVE 'V'. It most certainly is NOT far too expensive for the target demographic. The closest competitor (Lift+) competes on price ($2.30-$2.50) and is getting NOWHERE in the market. I wonder how much it has hit the secondary student market?
