Yes very good answer Nick. This idea of someone profiting someone losing is erroneous not only in the sharemarket but in most other transactions that are conducted in good faith. Take housing for instance. Using Simons logic the seller loses and the buyer profits but the seller was once a buyer of the same house and in most cases would have made a capital gain on the sale. Even a buyer of a car is not necessarily a loser. He may not recoup his original cost price on resale but he has had the use of the vehicle and it has serviced his transport needs so is he a loser ?
