You may have heard on the news this morning that a new email virus is rapidly making its way around the world. It comes as a message with the title ILOVEYOU, and contains an attachment which, if opened, will send itself on to everybody in the address book of people using the Microsoft Outlook mail client. As NIWA is in general not using Microsoft Outlook we are immune from this, however staff are likely to receive numbers of these messages from people in other organisations and these are going to have nuisance value - one staff member at Greta Point has received 3 already this morning. The Norton Antivirus definitions have not yet been updated to recognise this virus - I will make them available as soon as they appear on Symantec's web site. Meanwhile if you receive an email that has any of the following characteristics: Subject: ILOVEYOU Body: Kindly check the attached LOVELETTER coming from me Attachment: LOVE-LETTER-FOR-YOU.TXT.vbs - please resist the temptation to see who it comes from and delete it without opening it.
