[sharechat] kak virus (Outlook Express users, please read)
It looks like a few of our users have the Kak virus. This is a tricky
little virus because it attacks Outlook Express users who do nothing more
than read an infected message.. we used to say that you could only get
viruses through running attachments, unfortunately with Microsoft products
that's no longer true..
Could _everyone_ who uses Outlook Express, in particular Outlook Express
5, please go to the Microsoft WindowsUpdate site,
http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/ and get all the security
updates. Even if you don't have the virus, you should get these updates
for your general security (this isn't really a sharechat issue, it's just
a general precaution for anyone who gets email).
The Kak infection for most will have happened if you clicked "Yes" to a
warning about an unsafe ActiveX control. I believe the easiest way to
check if you have it is to see if there's a file called kak.htm in your
Windows directory, but I haven't checked that one out personally.
For those of you that do have Kak already, and there'll be a few, you
could read the Microsoft security bulletin at
http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/ms99-032.asp or the
McAfee virus bulletin at http://vil.mcafee.com/vil/wsh10509.asp
As usual the best protection is to have a virus scanner installed, and
when in doubt about a security prompt, say "no".
