Re: [sharechat] Technical stuff...

Replies should begin above the previous poster's words.
hmm, well, that's not really ideal either, IMHO.

The "official" way is to have replies below each bit of the text that you're responding to (as in this email - rather than quoting Phil's entire mail and adding my text in one big bit at the start or end).

If you're replying to a big long email, and you don't want to reply to specific bits of it (but instead have general comments on the material), then it's best to remove most of the length of it (leaving enough that people can get the context of which message you were replying to - saying [snip] or something similar is fairly common).

This means that people don't have to wade through masses of old material - especially sometimes when several people in a row don't delete the old stuff (and you get piles of >>> marks everywhere, mucked up as the lines get re-broken at every stage)..

It's difficult to find the relevant info of a reply when the new content is at the bottom.
yeah, you're right on on that one..

If there's irrelevant content, like doubleups of automatic footers, take the time to delete them.
Personal thankyou's are fantastic - but send 'em to the person who answered directly... their posting address is always on the mail.
Agreed..

BTW, for those of our users who're newer to the net, don't get too stressed about the amount of "netiquette" you don't know - we appreciate it when people do their best to make their posts easy to use, but no-one'll flame you on sharechat for not getting it perfect :)  But good on you for trying to clean it up a bit Phil - mail download times can get a bit noticeable when things are busy :)
