There are many reasons why companies should be happy to run at a loss for
several years. Their shareholders certainly have deep pockets but simply as
a Telco and ISP there is no justifiable reason to lay fibre based on the
five year returns they are likely to return. As a shareholder how long
should you expected to invest money in a company before you expect to
receive a return? 5 years seems to me to be on the long side.
My suspicions looking at overseas trends in the cable industry is they are
looking to realise gains through a sale to a likely suitor (eg Worldcom)
through the strategic worth of the company not through the companies future
earnings capability.
I still maintain that wireless access will be the medium of the medium
future.
