[sharechat] ADMIN: Connecting to IRC, subscribing to the forum

From: Will Bryant <will@sharechat.co.nz>

A few people have been having trouble connecting to the ShareChat Live IRC
server. If you want to use the java applet
(http://sharechat.co.nz/live.html), you must:
1. Have a reasonably recent browser
2. Have java enabled
3. Not be behind a firewall which blocks IRC

Most of the people who cannot connect are having problems because they are
behind a firewall, which is quite common in large businesses. If you think
that this is the case, talk to your helpdesk or IT support. They may also
run a proxy server that you can use for IRC, and should be able to set this
up for you. To use a proxy server, you will need an IRC client such as
mIRC (http://www.mirc.com/), as the java applet does not have this sort of
capability.

Secondly, several people have tried to sign up for the mailing list but
have made a mistake when typing in their email address when using the forms
to subscribe to the mailing list. Those of you who received this message
through email can safely ignore it as you are clearly successfully
subscribed, but if you are reading this from the website, and you tried to
sign up but never received the confirmation message or any messages from
the forum, please try signing up again, and double-check the email
address. In particular, check that you have remembered the '.nz' on the end.

Finally, a note regarding the virus emailed to the list earlier this
week. You should never open attachments emailed to you if you are not sure
of their contents. This is especially true if the message is from a person
that you do not know or was sent to a mailing list (for example, there is
no good reason for attachments to be emailed to the ShareChat list). Note
that, as in the case of the Happy99 worm that sent itself out to the list
this week, the email may appear to be from someone you know, but this does
not mean that the person themselves sent it. Most importantly, never open
programs (on the PC, these end in '.exe' or '.com') sent through email.
